Default Trans Questions

We are a small used car dealership and recently purchased an 02 which we were told needed a clutch. After tearing it apart (what a joy!), the clutch looks fine. We spoke to the previous owner who said he was driving it and it just lost all gears. When we put it in reverse there is some grinding noise. We spoke to the Mini dealer in Phila who said the 02's were prone to transmission problems. Could this be a shifter problem? Can these be rebuilt? They seem to be hard to find used. Any help?

Is it a Cooper or a Cooper S? The early Coopers have big problems with the tranmissions. The Cooper S has always been solid though.

It is not an S. Is this the problem that these generally have? Can they be rebuilt?

I've got the same problem on my 02.. :-(

A new tranny seems very expensive, however...
