I'm looking to purchase a used Cooper convertible with automatic trans, but have been advised to avoid the CVT. I'm told that all Cooper S came with a "real" automatic, but that the non-S didn't get one until later, possibly with the intro of the Gen. 2. Am I correct so far?
Can anyone tell me the model year in which the non-S convertible came with the real transmission?

I am not completely sure, but I believe the models after 2005 or 2006, came with a 5SPD auto transmission. Hopefully someone else can chime in and confirm or correct me if I am wrong.
