Default 2010 Mini Cooper Revving at Start

Hi,

My 2010 Mini with only 42000 did something very odd this morning. When starting, the first push did nothing while the second started the engine which then revved steadily up to 7k! Prodding the accelerator did not affect it. Turned off and tried again, same thing. Third time the idle was stable but high at 1500 rpm. Eventually settled in and no problems with the drive to work.

Parked at work with warm engine and tried to restart. Same issue with first push having no noticeable impact, and second push causing engine to race up to 7k.

Any ideas on what is causing this behaviour? Almost everything is original with exception of brakes, filters, tires. Battery is original,

Thanks for any insight!
Jay

Hello Jay, first I'd plug into the OBDII with a diagnostic scanner to see if any codes are present. Is it a manual or automatic?

It is a manual transmission. I made an appointment with an independent Mini repair shop for tomorrow. Brakes are due so it's not really an extra appointment.

Thanks,
jay

I'd think something is getting stuck, but curious to what they find so be sure to report back and let us know what they say.

Okay, the curious (and dangerous) thing was the rapid revving. Straight up at a fast and steady pace. Afraid the engine could blow if not shut off.

It could be something with the crank case ventilation system or a vacuum leak possibly. Any mods done to it? I'd also be curious about the throttle body, might have them clean it.

What did the shop find out?
