Default Mini love!

Hello,
Happy valentine's day! New member here.
I'm currently looking to buy a mini convertible from 2 private sellers, 2009 cooper base_30,000 miles vs. 2011 cooper S_63,000 miles. They are both white with brown leather seats which I specifically adore. They are asking similar price range, though the cooper base is asking too much based on KBB standard. I prefer the classic look of the cooper base than the sporty look of cooper S. The Turbo speed isn’t an important factor for me.
Could you pls share your insight about these two cars and despite my personal preference what would be a better purchase between them?

Thank you

Welcome to MINI Cooper Forums. 2011+ R56 is a good choice because it has the N18 engine, which has fewer issues than the 2007-2010 N14 engine Cooper S. If turbo and sporty isn't what you want, the 2009 base should be fine. It is also a non-turbo and isn't plagued with a bunch of issues that the Cooper S is. Compare pricing on truecar.com, cars.com, craigs list, etc. KBB is just a basis to get a pricing point, but does not reflect what MINI prices go for in your area. There are a lot of factors that play into pricing. You'll want to get a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) done by a qualified MINI shop before you purchase so you know what issues it may or may not have. Service records will help as you want to make sure they weren't neglected. Although they have low mileage, time is just as detrimental on a car as mileage and you want to make sure services have been done. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you so much for the reply. I have read about the engine issue of cooper S, that's another reason why I am not into the Turbo. You mentioned 2011 R56 has less issue with N18 engine, is it as reliable as the base model?

You're welcome. No, it's not as reliable because you still have the turbo system with direct injection and the HPFP. The HPFP is still a somewhat problem on the N18's, but not as big of a failure rate as the N14's. You don't really have the timing issues that the N14's have and other issues, but you still have potential for problems as you have forced induction vs. a naturally aspirated system. If the Cooper S is what you truly want, you're on the right path with going with a 2011+.
