Question Transmission

I have an 06 Cooper convertible (62,000 miles) which I recently took into the shop for a new battery. The mechanic asked me if I had ever had the transmission serviced. According to the mechanic, the transmission should be serviced to avoid having to put a new transmission in later. He quoted a price of $600 to $700 for transmission service and $8,500.for a new transmission. Is this something I really need to do now and how reasonable is his price?
