Default 2008 Mini cooper non turbo Eating a ton of oil

I am going to guess my vehicle is eating at least a quart of oil every 800 to 1000 miles. Whats going on here? THere are no leaks. I do tend to run the gas very low between fill ups could that be the culprit? The dip stick is horrible it registers adequate oil but I can tell from the sound of the engine it's not because it sounds almost like an exhaust leak. I add a quart of oil and the timing and performance becomes better. Can anyone tell me WTF is causing this? Is my car toast? 87K on it. Gimme a break.

My 2008 was consuming a lot of oil as well. I believe that the engine was burning the oil. I replaced the PCV valve diaphram in the valve cover and that did the trick.
