Default Check engine light

Hello. Check Engine light is on but OBD2 reader says no codes. Searching for codes while ignition is on and engine isn't running. Is that the correct procedure? Borrowed a second scanner and got the same "DTC 00" value. Anyone ever experience this? Model: Clubman, Year: 2009, OBD2 code reader $20 Performance Tech from Pepboys (maybe this scanner is a known problem for Mini's?). Thanks.

I recently purchased a 2009 Clubman S and I have a similar issue. Reduced power comes on on the dash and eventually the check engine light comes on. Then it goes off for a while. 2 different scanners come up with no codes detected. Did you ever find a resolve for this? I really like the car, but if this is how it's going to be I might have to cut my losses and buy something else already.
