Does anyone know of transmission mechanics in the Toronto area who can repair/rebuild the 5spd transmission in my 2005 mini R52.

I (with a little help from my friends) have lost 9 keys. (OK, stop laughing and start helping) I am told that I must change a computer part in the car before I can buy a (v. expensive) key when I lose the last one (Only 10 keys are compatible w/ the computer), or my car will be a lump of led. Does anyone have a work around this?

Thanks!

Default Mini Cooper CVT Lawsuit

Here is a company that is doing a Class action lawsuit against BMW on the Mini Cooper CVT Transmission.

Roland Tellis (SBN 186269)
rtellis@baronbudd.com
Mark Pifko (SBN 228412)
Baron & Budd, P.C.

If you are or have had problems with Mini Coopers Transmission or any other complaint about Mini Coopers quality, please send your complaints to Baron and Budd. It sounds like they are collecting complaints for the Class action Lawsuit they submitted. Case Number: CV11-07667

Default Interested in 2002 with 93k miles - Tran issues?

I am interested in buying a manual 2002 with 93k miles. I wanted to look at the forums before to find out if anything bad would happen once it reached 100k, just to be sure I was buying a solid car (I don't know much about them). I saw all the transmission issues and got a little worried, but it seems most of the issues occur around 50-70k miles, is that true? Is it possible this MINI passed the mark and will have a longer life?

Default Another Gearbox Bites the Dust

I've read through this thread... similar issues. 2002 Mini Cooper, 5-speed manual, bought it used in April with 74k miles, gearbox went out last Friday at 82k miles. I had just shifted from 1st to 2nd when it made a crunching sound and came to a screeching halt in the middle of the road. We had had the tell-tale whirring noise for a couple of weeks, sounds like by the time you get the noise it's too late?

I guess I'm looking for a used gearbox, and they are available, but not sure what to look for. Is it possible to substitute the 6-speed manual for the 5-speed? What additional needs to change? Now I know... break it in then run heavier oil. If I buy a used one start with heavier oil?

Default 2006 5 spd problems

Is there such a thing as a place (other than Mini) that is capable of rebuilding or repairing the 5 speed gearboxes? Better yet is there a shop manual for the gearbox? I have the shop manual generally available and it's worthless as far as transmission. I have a 2006 that will not go into 1st gear, or seems to engage and then grinds when you let the clutch out. This started out only happening a couple times a week then gradually got worse to the point now it's ALL the time. I thought it was cables and replaced them with OEM and it almost seemed to make it worse. Car only has 28K on it. I know Mini sells rebuilt units for ~1700-2000 but if I can get the problem fixed instead of a forklift changeout I would like to.
I would appreciate any input.
Thanks

Scroll up and read past messages. I rebuild them for 800 bucks. I should write a book on rebuilding them...

erk187, I sent an e-mail to the address referenced several messages above, never heard back. I have since ordered a reman gearbox due in this week. Any advice on the care and feeding of one of these things? Since my wife wants to keep it I might be contacting you in the future. (On 2nd thought, is it worth forgoing the $200 core charge and holding on to this one for the inevitable use? And if so, what is your turn around time?)
