Default Coilovers

Hi guys. This is my first post, I haven't done much work on minis but do have 20 years experience. I do not however have alot of experience with coil overs.
I've only used them a few times and the way i was tought to do them this just seems really gaff to me. Is this something people normally do on minis to get them lowered?
There is a huge gap in the top of the spring and the upper bearing. I understand when the car is lowered on the ground it will sit on the springs but is jw if this is something
people normally do with coilovers just to get the car lower or something? I thought that upper adjustment was the spring preload that it wasn't the height adjustment.
