Default 2012 Mini Cooper Manual Transmission Fluid

Hi Guys,

I have a non turbo 2012 Mini Cooper. I always use Amsoil and I am ordering oil and transmission fluid. The Mini has a manual transmission and Amsoil has no recommendations for fluid (for transmission). It just says:

(1) To determine the correct gear box oil, check the sticker on the transmission. Manual gear box oil MTF-LT-3 is marked with a blue sticker. Manual gear box oil MTF-LT-4 is marked with a yellow sticker. Do not mix MTF-LT-3 with MTF-LT-4. (1) To determine the correct gear box oil, check the sticker on the transmission. What do people use and can I just use the Syncromesh?

The non-turbo and turbo cars use different manual transmissions, which is why the fluid recommendations are different. Your 2012 non-turbo Mini requires BMW MTF-LT-3 or MTF-LT-4 depending on the color sticker on the transmission. Those fluids are specifically formulated for that gearbox’s synchros. You should not substitute synchromesh unless the transmission is specified for it, as it can cause rough shifting or premature wear. Check the sticker and use the correct LT-3 or LT-4 fluid or an exact approved equivalent.
