Mini dealer says I need a new DME
Hi all. This is my first post here, so please be gentle. It's also quite lengthy. Sorry about that...
Anyway, so I don't bore you with all the details, I have a 2014 Countryman S. I recently had a bunch of work done by a local shop because I noticed a small coolant leak. This repair shop is a foreign car repair specialist. They replaced oil cooler seal, filter housing seal, thermostat housing and all the necessary hoses.
I drove the car home from the shop which was about 8 miles away. Didn't notice any problems or leaks. The car sat for about 4 days or so (I work from home).
The next time I used the car was to drive it to our local state park which is about 12 miles away. On the trip there, a warning came up on the screen that the engine was running a little hot and to drive conservatively.
We got to the park with no issues and did a hike. Driving home this warning came on again. I thought it might have been a warning the repair shop for got to reset. We drove a little further and the warning became red! Said to pull over now. I was able to get it to a friend's house who actually used to race Minis. We let the car cool overnight. The next day I went back to investigate the issue.
The issue?? No coolant was in the car. None! And the hose to the reservoir was not connected as well! We had to add a whole gallon and half of coolant to get it back where it needed to be.
I brought it back to the repair shop and they were very embarrassed and sorry this happened. They did another wild change and a coolant flush. This time, they did put coolant in the car.
Anyway, the car started to misfire on the way home from this second visit. Again went into limp mode. Bright the car back to the repair shop for the third time and they couldn't figure out why the misfire so it had to be towed to the nearest Mini dealer.
The mini dealer has done all the obvious test and found nothing. Now the Mini dealer says the car needs a new DME.
I guess my question after this whole story is... can a very overheated engine cause the DME to fail?
The car was running great prior to this whole debacle. I know someone's going to say I should have checked the coolant level, but I was not thinking of this. Adding coolant after this job should have been a no brainer.
