Ok, here is what it was after a week sitting in the shop...a simple $29 "shifter assembly part # 25-111504207" part made of carbon fiber had deteriorated. The deterioration is apparently a fluke caused by battery acid venting onto the part. Suspect that the car had been in a wreck at some point that caused the leakage...other that that they say the car is in great shape.
Here's to hoping someone else gets a little help out of it.

How in the world could battery acid possibly get into the shifter assembly with the battery in the boot?

I am having trouble with my central locking. The radio stopped working, the fuse had gone so this was replaced however at the same time the fuse for the central locking was also removed and when replaced the central locking no longer worked. The key fob will open the locks but will not lock it? does the central locking need to be reset or is this a big problem? any ideas?
