Default Power steering & check engine light

Need some help Please, have 2 issues going on here
The first , the power steering works at first ,then after awhile of driving it justs stops assisting. Shut the car off for some time and then it works fine again. Is there a relay somewhere that trips out then will reset itself?

Question 2 The car has 84,000 miles and the check engine light just came on. Is it like chysler, where they program the light to come on? Or is there anyway to self check the system, without getting hit hard by the dealer .
Thanks Randy

Power steering sounds like it's a pump issue, it's electric and they go bad after a while.

The CEL you can have checked at autozone or somewhere like that, they'll usually do it for free.

The ses light comes on when there is a problem with the engine such that the pollution levels in the exhaust exceed 1.5 the federal standard. this system was made mandatory on all vehicles sold in the USA staring in 1996 regardless of manufacturer.

Auto zone will scan the car for free...if you reply with the error code I can advise you further.

BBA Reman will rebuild the PS pump if it is defective for $200 with a lifetime guarantee! This is a good deal since the pump cost is approx $600 at the dealer. The pump is easy to replace with a few hand tools. You will also need to purchase the power steering fluid from the dealer.

Hope this helps.
