Default rumble at a bad frequency

Good Day!

I am looking at used minis, 2004 thru 2006. One that I have found and really like has an noise issue that renders it unbearable to drive. If I can figure out what is wrong with it, I may still want to purchase it.

When in idle and cityspeeds there is a frequency in addition to the usual rumble of the engine that hurts your ears in the same way opening one window in a car creates a pressure frequency that is relieved by cracking open another window. Only there is no way to relieve this pulsing.

Is this inherent to the engine design and is there a part that wears and simply needs adjustment? Or can I put in some sound dampening foam somewhere. I cannot determine how it is translating through the car.

I really want this car - nice price with nice options.

Examine the tires closely for scalloping on the outside/inside edges ... Worn tires like that can cause bad noises ...
If the fronts look bad that MIGHT be the trouble ...

Hi Amanda-

Is it a S or standard Cooper? I would agree with Bad Venge except that you mention that you hear the noise at "idle". I'm no mechanic, but I have a 04 Cooper with 114,000+ miles and I've never noticed a sound like what you describe. Sometimes those sound 'gremlins' can be the hardest things to fix.

Good luck-
