Default transmission linkage or sensor issue

Hey everyone im new to the forum. I have a 2009 mini clubman S. Put the car in park (so i thought). got up the next day to start the car and put the key in and nothing turned on or "clicked" on. i then realizied that the steering was not locked. I have a brand new battery in it so it is not that. So steering is not locked and will not start. i cannot get it out of park. My thoughts are that it is either a sensor that is not telling the car its in park or the linkage is jammed. Any clue what this could be and has anyone had this happen? looking for a fix!!

Have you spilled anything in the center console or by the shifter ? make sure its all the way in park and not half way clicked in. Also is the key all the way in the dash slot and clicked in.

Thanks
