Default 2012 Mini Cooper S; Clunk noise while driving, then engine light and stall.

Sorry if I ramble but, I just wanted to put as much information as I could. Also I only bought the car 30 days ago and it has about 119,000 miles. Any help is appreciated.

My wife was driving our 2012 Mini Cooper S automatic and I was in the passenger seat. She wasn't accelerating hard and we were only going about 35mph then, out of nowhere, there was a clunk sort of noise along with the car slowing down quite a bit at the same time. (there wasn't anything in the road) The service engine message came on and it was running really rough so we pulled over, left it idling and I took a look to see if there was anything obviously wrong. There was nothing visibly wrong with it but after a couple minutes of me visually inspecting it, it just stopped running. We tried restarting it a few times. Most of the time it wouldn't start but if it did it would idle really rough for a second or two then die. (Changing throttle position had no effect) We ended up getting it towed back to our house that night.(last friday) I pulled the oil filter out on saturday and dug through it and there was no metal in it.
