Default Wanted: Recommendation for a radar detector

We went without a radar detector for Mini Takes the States in 2018 and were frankly very lucky.

We're going to Mini on the Mack this year and planning to do MTTS again in 2020, and I find that the older I get, I can't simultaneously process both driving, er, exuberantly, and watching out for traffic/speed patrols as well as before.

So, I'd appreciate recommendations for radar detectors...good, bad, too expensive and over-rated, etc. as well as practical tips. Yes, yes, "don't speed" is a proper recommendation and probably the best, but, well, you know...

Thanks

I use an Escort Passport 8500 (dinosaur) which is mostly effective for the speed traps in Florida since many of the police still use Ka band. While it used to be the king of radar detectors, there have been great technological advancements in the last decade, and if you want max protection, I've heard great, great things about the Uniden R1 or R3 (they've got the same detection range but R3 has built in GPS):

There's also always the classic Valentine One, which I think still is one of, if not the best, laser detection. Found this with a quick search (some forum arguing, be warned ):

This probably isn't helpful to you and I am gonna jinx myself now having never gotten a speeding ticket but I am a firm believer that the best radar detector is your eyes. I am always on the lookout either in the mirrors or on the shoulders. Has totally worked for me.
