Default Oil consumption

Hi I have just joined this forum hoping that one of the experts out there can help me with some information on my 2007 Mini Cooper S JCW auto.
Since I have been driving it I am startled at how much oil it consumes, not leaking or blowing smoke but just eats it. If the oil level is not kept up I hear the chain tensioner "death rattle", more oil in, noise goes away.
Sometimes the idle is rough like hunting when stationary at light, if I take it out of drive to neutral it calms down.
The vehicle only has 73,000 kms I am surprised at a relatively new cars poor
engine manners, is this to be expected from this model?
Thank you for your help,
Regards,
Paul

- First make sure it's not leaking any oil if it's just disappearing. These models are known to get rid of some oil as they are driven but to an extent. If it's not leaking any let it sit and idle for about 10 minutes then give it some gas after 10 minutes of it idling, it may smoke then, in that case your oil seals in your turbo probably burnt up a little at one point in time and is letting oil get into where it's spooling and either burning it off so quick while driving it's unnoticeable, or it's very minor at this point.
-about your timing chain, if you can't hear it when the oil is where it's supposed to be don't do nothing quite yet, you could change the tensioner to see if that may fix it for the time being but the damage is done so expect a new one in the future.
