Default abs problem

Hopefully someone can assist with the following?
my daughter has an 04 cooper. The front control arm bushes needed replacing. In the process of doing so the n/s/f abs sensor got trapped and sheared at its mounting in the strut.
i purchased a cheap sensor which did not fit the hole in the strut hence it was returned. A quality replacement fits fine. My autel 802 code reader turned off the warning light but once the car gets to 10/15mph the lights return.
The code reader will isolate each wheel and suggests the nsf is not registering. To me this suggests a break in the wiring, posibly caused when the original sensor broke.
As other wheels register on the reader I have to assume that the module is ok..or am I wrong? Can a short wipe out one.branch of the module?
It is not the best time of year for working on the car outside without cover therefore any suggestions from knowledgable members would be greatly appreciated.
thank you.
